After the successful completion of two phases of the project “Afforestation of the burned area in the Homolje locality”, implemented by the City of Konjic, JP Å umarstvo Prenj Konjic and the FBiH Environmental Protection Fund, the final, experimental phase began these days. The official presentation was attended by representatives of all actors in the project, who expressed satisfaction with the successfully implemented activities in the past two years.
“This is a big step not only for the City of Konjic and our public company Å umarstvo Prenj, but also for Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region. The innovative solution for afforestation that we present today will be an important step forward for other communities as well,” said Mayor Osman Ćatić, explaining that the initiative was created through regular meetings with directors of public companies. “The Director of Forestry, Prenj, highlighted the problem of afforestation of large burnt areas. Given the inaccessible terrain, minefields and danger for workers, we looked for solutions to overcome this. Thanks to the support of the Environmental Protection Fund and the Federal Institute for Agropedology, we have reached this significant result. We are proud to be the first in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region to apply this method of afforestation,” said Ćatić.
“We use so-called seed bombs – seeds of indigenous species coated with an earthen substrate. The goal is to successfully afforest steep and difficult-to-access terrain, including contaminated areas. We are doing something that has not been done in BiH before.”
